We all know that CO₂ is widely recognised as the main contributor to climate change and there is no single solution to this complex issue. However, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact through a broad range of measures and actions. These include making our vehicles more fuel-efficient and our manufacturing processes more sustainable.

We have already developed a range of ECOnetic and Flexifuel vehicles which are widely available. And it isn’t just our vehicles that can make a difference.

We are developing a number of technological advances too, that combine to provide significant reductions in CO₂ including hydrogen-fuelled fuel cell technology.

ECOnetic

Our ECOnetic range offers practical, affordable and sustainable vehicles, without sacrificing on style or driving dynamics. Combining our Ford kinetic Design style with high-tech conventional powertrain technology, ECOnetic vehicles use a clever combination of lower drive resistance, better aerodynamics and ultra-efficient engines to deliver class-leading ultra-low CO₂ emissions. This makes them great to look at, great to drive, and more energy-efficient.

This means there is now one ECOnetic option available from Ford in Ireland - 140g/km Ford Mondeo ECOnetic, and we will continue to work towards making more low CO₂ cars available in Ireland.

A natural approach

Flexifuel vehicles run on E85, a blend of 85% bioethanol and 15% unleaded petrol. The ‘flexi’ engine can also run on petrol, as well as any combination of both. This means you have a practical choice when it’s not possible to fill up with E85 at your local filling station. The engine automatically detects which fuel is present and makes any adjustments. So all you notice is smooth, powerful performance.

Bioethanol is a milk derivative an by-product of the cheese manufacturing process. Flexifuel vehicles running on E85 reduce CO₂ emissions by between 30 to 80%, without compromising performance, driving pleasure or style.

This means you have a practical choice when it’s not possible to fill up with E85 at your local filling station. The engine automatically detects which fuel is present and makes any adjustments. So all you notice is smooth, powerful performance.

Flexifuel vehicles are therefore kinder on the environment and your wallet. Priced at a similar level to petrol-only equivalents, they offer all the advantages of bioethanol. This includes the availability of tax incentives which lower the overall running costs for FFVs.

Future technologies

There’s no one easy answer to climate change. So we are investing and researching a wide range of environmentally-advanced and affordable technological solutions. As part of these initiatives, we already have a range of low-CO₂ technologies for both conventional and alternative engines.

We currently have projects under way to develop new generations of petrol and clean diesel engines, based on advanced fuel-saving direct injection technologies. We are also investigating how to produce new generations of fuel-saving transmissions.
